If a traveler is adding on personal (sojourn*) days to their University-sponsored trip or is traveling with a companion who will be sharing the same accommodations, the traveler and the companion must purchase coverage. This is required and at an additional cost to the traveler. The companion must purchase insurance for the entire duration of the trip; employee is only required to purchase insurance for personal (sojourn) days. Coverage is limited to 30 days for Hawaii and Alaska.

Note: insurance is available to all employees, no matter the campus affiliation. The cost of companion/sojourn coverage is $1.50/day for international travel and $0.68/day for Hawaii/Alaska travel. More details are on the NU Travel Office website.

Once an international travel request is approved that contains personal and/or companion travel, the insurance total will be deducted from a payroll run within 60 days of the trip start date. The total cost will be displayed on the pay advice as TRAVLINS within Other Deductions.
